"Live Each Day in Victory" - Monday, April 10, 2017 - submitted by Dianne Prince When Jesus came to the earth, He was fully man and He was fully God. As a human, Jesus had a beginning and an end. He got tired. He got hungry. He was in agony. He was tempted. He prayed. He wept. He questioned God, “Why have you forsaken me?” He was self limiting in wisdom (“And Jesus grew in wisdom” Luke 2:52 (NIV). And, He died. These are all traits of a human being. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. John 1:14 (NIV) Yes, Jesus was fully human. He was also fully God. As God, He has no beginning and He has no end. Jesus always “was” and always “will be.” As God, He called the weary to come to Him as a source of rest. He declared himself the bread of life. He healed all manner of diseases. He could not sin. He answered prayers. He called the dead to life. And, He reconciled the world back to God. One of the reasons Jesus came to earth in the flesh was to destroy the works of the devil. The devil does not have a body of his own so he manifests his works through our fleshly nature and through our human desires. “The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” 1 John 3:7 (NIV) As Christians, we will always experience a real struggle with the flesh. The flesh will always tug at our minds and our spirits with the intent to trip us up. The flesh will always cause us to stumble. Paul says in Galatians 5:17, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” There is always a war going on between your flesh and your spirit. Your spirit says “go right.” Contrary to the spirit, your flesh says, “No, go left.” Your spirit says, “Don’t say anything” and your flesh immediately says, “Don’t let him get away with that.” Your spirit says, “You know you should not be going to the club three nights a week” and your flesh follows up with, “There is nothing wrong with going out with your friends every now and then because you work hard.” Yes, there is always a struggle between good and evil, right and wrong, and “should I do or should I not do.” The struggle originates from Satan. Jesus came to destroy the works of Satan and the stronghold he tries to have on our lives. According to Paul, works such as “sexual immorality, impurity, corruption, idolatry, witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like” (Galatians 5:19-21) are from the evil one. Living a sinless life will never be achieved while you live on this earth. Nonetheless, sin for the believer, is not a way of life. Believers do not sin habitually. Yes, we all fall into sin when our spiritual guard is down. However, when we fall we do not stay down. When we fall we do not wallow in the mud. Conversely, we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, ask God for forgiveness, and move forward. Jesus came to destroy the power of sin over us. He came to destroy our fear of tomorrow, to destroy our worry over things for which we have no control, and to destroy our anxiety over people whose decisions can impact our future. Jesus came to destroy sickness, to destroy financial lack, and to destroy those things that disrupt our peace. Jesus came to set us free from everything that is contrary to the Word of God. “And ye shall know the truth [Jesus], and the truth shall make you free. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:32, 36) How does Jesus set you free? He sets you free through a daily dose of His Word and through a daily routine of prayer. Paul says in Galatians 5:16, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” How do you walk by the Spirit? Feed your Spirit large doses of God’s Word. The more you feed your spirit, the weaker your flesh gets. The more you feed your spirit, the stronger your resistance to the devil gets. The Spirit empowers you with “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23) Those are the tools you need to overcome the tricks of the devil. How do you activate those tools? Ask God. Stay in His face through prayer. He will liberally give you the tools necessary to successfully defeat the enemy. The more often you ask God, the stronger you will grow in your areas of weakness. The more diligent you are about asking God, the more power God will pour upon you. Try it throughout the day. God always delivers. Jesus gave you power over the devil. That power is in His Word and that power is in your prayers to Him. Use God’s power to your advantage. Use it to live each day in victory. “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit”.
